The Things I’ve Overheard
Everyone overhears stuff that makes them internally chuckle, followed by that moment t when you want to laugh, but if you do it’ll give away the fact that you’re inadvertently eavesdropping. In honor of those many mental chuckles and awkward moments of forced silent, I’ve compiled some things I’ve overheard lately at Starbuck’s, school, and in general conversation. I’d like to thing of them as...

Pocahontas in Space
The opening shots were breathtaking, the Hallelujah Mountains were stunningly imaginative, and the graphics have set a new platinum standard for cinema. But, alas, the story lacked so much. I saw Avatarin theaters, and was attracted to the beauty of the setting, but the attraction was quickly eclipsed by the lack of story. For me, a movie has to meet three criteria in order for me to say I...

Parenthood
Two things: 1. I need to see this new NBC show, because apparently it’s good. Either it’s something like thirtysomething or it’s completely unwatchable. But it has Peter Krause (of Six Feet Under), so how bad can it be? 2. I’m in the midst of writing a play about abortion, so far so good….

St. Arbucks: The Third Place Sanctuary
My first week in California was absolutely awful. Really, I guess the first month was pretty terrible but in the midst of all that unbearable chaos there was a moment of serenity. On my way to church, we stopped by our local Starbucks and when I walked in, all my homesickness and anxiety left. As the smell of roasted coffee beans filled my senses and the ambience of the lighting shown upon me, I...

American's Beauty
“It’s hard to stay mad, when there’s so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing it all at once, and it’s too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that’s about to burst… And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can’t feel anything but gratitude for every single...

These Little Wonders
I just finished watching the Disney movie Meet the Robinsons, and it reminded me of some things I’ve always thought very highly of. First is family: is so important to have a community of people around you who love you, out of genuine admiration and not out of duty. Family is that for me, not only people I’m related to me, but the people who rally around me at all times. I’m slowly learning the...

Stranger than a Lost Mockingbird
My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird. Thus, I compare all other books to it, and so far no other characters have been as real to me as Scout, Jem, and Dill were. When I closed the book for the first time, I remember truthfully feeling as if they were still living their lives behind the back page. Somehow that feeling is both comforting (because it’s nice to know they’re still...
